POWERBUILDING VS

BODYBUILDING

Which is better?

My background is predominately bodybuilding having won a EFBB British Bodybuilding title in 1998 with a perfect score! I had trained like a conventional bodybuilder for ten years to win that title… But would i train the same way now to win that same title with the knowledge i have now, the answer is simple NO!

I have experimented with many training systems and found that using a strength based system at the beginning of my workout benefited my mass building and strength.

I see some bodybuilders get caught up in what is a traditional approach, they are afraid of change. If you compare a power lifter and strong mans mass to that of a bodybuilder, the bodybuilder is so much smaller in comparison.

So Strength training systems I have used Wendler 531, Cube System (Juggernaut Training Systems) and Ladders (Pavel Beyond Bodybuilding).

In the 8 week cycle I did the Wendler 531 System I put on 5kg of mass at the age of 49 my strength volume training went through the roof eg 190kg Deadlift for 12 reps and 170kg Squat for 15 reps… My Bench Press and Military Press didn’t make massive improvements using Wendler, but using Pavel’s ladders system my bench went into 170kg for 1rep and Military press was 100kg for 1rep. So mixing systems helped.

So what is Bodybuilding …Bodybuilding is the use of progressive resistance exercise to control and develop one's musculature. An individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder.

Powerbuilding is a combination of bodybuilding and powerlifting, in which the goal is to get as big and strong as possible. Powerbuilding meshes hypertrophy and strength training, by focusing on heavy compound movements and weight progression

WHAT IS OLYMPIC LIFTING?

Weightlifting, also called Olympic weightlifting, is an athletic discipline in the modern Olympic programme in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates.

The two competition lifts in order are the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each weightlifter receives three attempts in each, and the combined total of the highest two successful lifts determines the overall result within a bodyweight category. Bodyweight categories are different for male and female competitors. A lifter who fails to complete at least one successful snatch and one successful clean and jerk also fails to total, and therefore receives an "incomplete" entry for the competition. The clean and press was once a competition lift, but was discontinued due to difficulties in judging proper form.

In comparison with other strength sports, which test limit strength (with or without lifting aids), weightlifting tests aspects of human ballistic limits (explosive strength); the lifts are therefore executed faster - and with more mobility and a greater range of motion during their execution

- than other strength movements. Properly executed, the snatch and the clean and jerk are both dynamic and explosive while appearing graceful, especially when viewed from a recording at a slowed speed.

While there are relatively few competitive Olympic weightlifters, the lifts performed in the sport of weightlifting, and in particular their component lifts (e.g. squats, deadlifts, cleans), are commonly used by elite athletes in other sports to train for both explosive and functional strength.
